Innovative Archimedes Screw Prototype for Renewable Energy Leader FreeFlow 69

Able Engineering is proud to be manufacturing a next-generation Archimedes screw prototype for micro hydro power specialist FreeFlow 69, supporting the advancement of efficient, low-carbon renewable energy solutions in the UK.

FreeFlow 69 are recognised as a market leader in micro hydro renewable energy systems, designing solutions across private, commercial and small industrial sectors. With over a decade of expertise, their work spans both modern and traditional technologies.

The prototype features a steel shaft combined with flights, a design engineered to deliver a lighter, more cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative to traditional screws.

Able Engineering has been selected as the UK manufacturing partner, building on an established relationship where Able produces FreeFlow 69’s high-quality stainless steel water wheels. This ongoing collaboration reflects a shared focus on precision engineering, durability and scalable production.

Smarter Design for Modern Hydro Power

The introduction of light weight flights marks a key innovation in the design. By reducing overall weight and optimising material use, the system offers:

  • Improved installation efficiency and handling

  • Reduced manufacturing costs

  • Enhanced operational performance

  • Lower overall material consumption

A standout feature of this design is the integration of a slide sluice valve with a built-in debris guard directly within the transition inlet. This enables precise control of water flow while preventing debris from entering the system, reducing the risk of blockages and unplanned downtime.

By combining these elements into a single, compact solution, the design simplifies installation, improves operational reliability, and lowers ongoing maintenance requirements. Making it particularly well-suited to real-world river environments where consistency and resilience are critical.

This modern approach reimagines a proven technology, making micro hydro power more accessible and commercially viable across a wider range of applications.

Supporting the Transition to Low-Carbon Energy

Archimedes screws are a well-established method of generating electricity from flowing water, particularly suited to low-head hydro sites. Their ability to generate consistent, renewable power with minimal environmental disruption makes them an increasingly important solution in the shift towards sustainable energy infrastructure.

Innovations like this prototype play a critical role in expanding the adoption of clean energy systems, helping organisations reduce carbon emissions while making use of natural, renewable resources.
